Laughing and a Quick Hello

Is there any better sound than a baby laughing?

Baby Frankenstein

For the past few weeks, Ben has been taking a few steps here and there. Usually 5 or 6 steps. But in the past few days, he's started walking greater stretches. I wouldn't say he is officially "walking," but he is pretty darn close.

I must admit it is quite a thing to see your baby walking. He is growing so fast. It just blows me away. But as touching as it is to see him walking, I am usually laughing too hard to shed a tear, because he looks like Baby Frankenstein when he walks. Check him out!

Sorry, I don't know how to rotate this video. If anyone knows, please fill me in!

First Word

About 2 weeks ago, Ben said his first word. At first we thought it was a fluke, but time has proven that he understands what he is saying. The association is definitely there.

Is his first word mama? No.

Dada? No.

His first word is Dee.

Man, he loves that dog.

Here is a short clip of him saying it. Usually he belts it out enthusiastically, but of course he clammed up as soon as the camera came out. Still, he says it a few times. It works better when Dee is around, but she tends to keep clear of him when she can these days, as Ben is going through a hitting phase.

Snow Bunny

Saturday we awoke to our first snow of the year. We decided to bundle Ben up and let him check it out. When I say bundle, I mean bundle. The poor kid. Gloves, hat, coat, and snow pants, on top of socks and footed pajamas. He was ready!

I carried him out to the backyard. At first he didn't really react. He just quietly checked it out.

Then Mike tried to sit him down. Ben was so loaded down with clothes, he couldn't manage to sit up at first.

While it looks like he is making a snow angel, really he just fell backwards thanks to all those layers and couldn't get himself up.

As the snow fell on his face, he kept blinking his eyes and making these very confused faces.

Once he figured out how to stay sitting, he started to enjoy the snow. He just watched the snow fall for a bit.

Then he tried to get his hands in it and play with it.

Not one to be left out, Dee had to get in on the action. She perched herself right on Mike so she could keep an eye on Ben.

Ben likes to be on the move, so he quickly grew tired of just sitting. He decided to crawl around and explore.

Except between the 4 inches of snow and the snow suit, he was too bulky to move. He was NOT happy about this realization!

And that ended our adventure in the snow.

Second First Hair Cut

While we did a decent job trimming Ben's tail and mullet, the rest of his hair was just getting too long. It was on the verge of getting in his eyes it was so long in front. So today, since I was off work to unpack from the camping trip, I figured I'd pop in to Kidsnips and see if they could give Chubs a trim.

I don't have any pictures of the actual hair cut because I sat in the chair with him on my lap while the stylist cut his hair. But he LOVED it. He was a total charmer, smiling, craning his neck to get a look at the stylist, and checking himself out in the mirror constantly. It was adorable.

I got a few pictures of his hair after we got home. It is the same general style, just shorter. He looks even more "boyish" now.

Not sure what the deal is with this face. I think the flash surprised him, so he squinted...

Here is the certificate they made for him at Kidsnips, complete with a few locks of hair and his picture. So cute!!!

First Haircut

Brad offered to take some 6 month photos of Ben for us (he is an aspiring photographer), so we settled on some outdoor photos in downtown Naperville. Before we met up with Brad for the photo shoot, I suggested to Mike that perhaps it was time to trim Ben's tail and mullet. He reluctantly agreed. However, he was unwilling to let me take him to Kidsnips and spend $20 to trim his neck. :-(

So in the name of compromise, we cut his hair, but we did it ourselves.

First we tried using scissors. I was able to cut off the tail and some of the mullet. But then Mike suggested using his clippers to straighten the area. Since he has more experience, he took over.

You can tell by Ben's expression that he wasn't at all sure what to make of the noise of the clippers.

He kept jerking around to get a better look, which makes cutting hair tricky. But eventually he settled down and Mike continued.

I think we did a pretty good job, considering neither of us have ever cut hair before. We left the top alone. We just straightened up that neck line and trimmed some of the long pieces around his ears and cowlick. I think it looks a lot better, but I'm sure I'll be hearing it from a lot of people for touching his hair.

I think he looks just a little bit older and boyish with his hair trimmed, but he is still my baby! After our photo session, we went to dinner at Quigley's, an Irish pub in downtown Naperville that Gammy knows well! Ben did great in a big-boy high chair now that he is sitting so well!

And yes, we do occassionally take that pacifier out of his mouth! It just so happens that it seemed to settle him down for the hair cut, and he was fussy at dinner because he was exhausted from his runway work.

Brad is going to finalize the pictures and send them, so I'll be sure to forward them on. My hopes are high that he got some really adorable shots!

Too big for the swing?

Ever since Ben learned to roll over, he prefers to sleep on his stomach. When I put him in his crib for bed, he immediately flips onto his left side to sleep.

Yesterday Ben fell asleep in my arms, so after a few minutes I decided to transition him to his swing for a nap. But unfortunately that instict to roll to his left side held firm. As soon as I put him down, he flipped over, never even waking up.

I think the days of the swing might be numbered...

And if you're wondering why he's in just a diaper, it is because he tried prunes this morning -- He liked the prunes, but Mom didn't like the purple drool that got all over his clothes and the carpet!

Sittin' Pretty

My baby is growing up so fast. In a few days he will be 6 months old. And now he has mastered the art of sitting. Something about a baby sitting just makes them seem so much older and more grown up.

About two weeks ago, he was a wobbly, 10 second sitter.

In the bathtub, he was sitting great, thanks to the help of the tub's design.

But then last week, he finally got it. And now he's sittin' pretty all the time!

And before I know it, he'll be crawling!

Fun Times with Rice Cereal

Today marked two milestones in Ben's short life -- he turned 5 months old and he tried his first rice cereal. Here he is getting ready for his first "meal."

Ready for the first delicious bite!

Hmm, he's not sure what to make of this stuff. But he's game to try anything.

But after a few bites, he decides he's given it enough of a try and is pretty sure he's not buying what I'm selling.

I think this face says "What the hell is this crap, Mom?"

At this point, he decides to take matters into his own hands and grabs the bowl to get a closer look at what we're trying to feed him.

Once he's examined it, we try some more. Nope, still not liking it.

Enough already!

The rice cereal is apparently so gross, he'd rather eat his bib.

The aftermath...

Ben's very into grabbing everything and anything these days. Here, he grabs Dad's face.

Next, he grabs my hair -- a real favorite of his. Unfortunately, he loves to shove my hair in his mouth. Not so pleasant for me when that mouth is covered in rice cereal.

Thinking he's really funny after grabbing my hair, he gives a triumphant face.

All in all, it wasn't so bad. He is not sure what to make of it, but he is really interested in the spoon, and he didn't cry or fuss. He just didn't actually swallow much of it. Better luck next time...

Scooting

These days, Ben loves to scoot himself around. The Baby Einstein playmat just can't contain him anymore.

Apparently the bottom of the ottoman looked a lot more interesting than the toys, so he decided to scoot himself right under there to get a better look.

All I could think of when I saw him was when the house falls on the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, and only her legs are visible.

He seemed to like what he saw underneath the ottoman. Content with his inspection, he started to cry to let me know he needed a little help out.

Once he was back on the playmat, he decided to hide underneath his t-shirt instead.

First Time Apart

Ben is 9 weeks old now, and except for a few quick trips to the grocery store while Ben stayed with Dad, I have not been away from him yet. To prepare me for May 12, my first day back to work from maternity leave, we thought maybe we should do a trial run to make sure I could handle it. So Grandma Nancy eagerly agreed to watch Ben for a few hours while Mike golfed and I cleaned the garage. I packed up his diaper bag and loaded him into his car seat.

As I started to say goodbye, I got a little choked up at the thought of his leaving without me.

Ben and Mike didn't seem to share my sentiments. They were perfectly happy and ready to go!

So I sucked it up, slapped on a smile, and said goodbye.

Ben had a great time playing with Grandma and their collies, Jake and Rocky. At one point, Jake even brought Ben one of his dog toys to play with. So sweet!
Ben came home exhausted after his busy day and slept for 9 hours straight, his longest sleep yet! And I think I will survive my first day back to work, after a few tears of course.
